Garry Maisel, president and CEO of Western Health Advantage in Sacramento, has been named chairman of the California Association of Health Plans (CAHP) board of directors.

Maisel takes over from Blue Shield of California CEO Paul Markovich. The chairman position is a two-year position at Sacramento-based CAHP. In a statement, Maisel noted that CAHP has played a key role in getting millions of Californians signed up for health care under the federal Affordable Care Act.

“Our work is not done. During my chairmanship, I look forward to improving upon our newly transformed health care system, continuing to lower our uninsured rate and addressing underlying costs that threaten the long-term affordability of health care,” said Maisel.

Maisel has been with Western Health Advantage since its inception in 1996. The regional health plan serves eight regional counties and has more than 110,000 members.
