Lab Tests 101

Tests can I.D. problems with long-term meds

Results from laboratory tests are the basis for the vast majority of medical decisions, according to the College of American Pathologists. That's why it's vital for you to complete your lab tests when your doctor orders them.

Among the many reasons lab tests are needed is to assess the impact on your health of long-term medications. You're at higher risk of harmful side effects or other problems if  you've been taking the same meds for a long time. A blood test to check potassium levels may be ordered, for example, for people being treated with diuretics, including those with high blood pressure.

FYI: To ensure accurate lab results, follow the pretesting instructions provided by your doctor or lab facility. Also, be sure to give your doctor a complete medical history, including the list of medications and/or any supplements you are taking. Another helpful hint: Be sure to get your lab tests completed before your next appointment. That way your doctor can review the results and the two of you can discuss them.
