No one single food group can protect against cancer.  But researchers have found strong evidence that a diet rich in variety of plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and others help lower the risk. These foods work together with other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals to protect against cancer.

What you can do

There are some things that can't be controlled like our family history and others we can control.  A healthy diet is just one way.  Other ways include:

  • Getting regular exercise and staying active
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding or limiting your alcohol intake
  • Limiting red or processed meats
  • Not using tobacco products and avoiding second hand smoke
  • Avoiding radon exposure
