As of January 1, 2018, UC Davis Medical Group will no longer be available in the WHA Network.

We understand that you may be concerned about this change and we are committed to doing anything and everything we can to support you and help you through this change. WHA continues to offer a network of 275 primary care physicians (PCPs) in the Sacramento region, giving you a choice from Hill Physicians Medical Group, Mercy Medical Group, Woodland Clinic Medical Group and NorthBay Healthcare.

When do I have to change my PCP?

If you have a PCP in the UC Davis Health system, you may start the process of selecting a new provider from our extensive network now. You will have until December 15, 2017 to make your selection of a non UC PCP. Your new PCP choice is effective the first day of the month following notification. You must wait until the effective date before seeking care from your new PCP, or the services may not be covered.

How do I change my PCP?

To locate a list of available physicians, please refer to WHA's online provider directory. You may also request a printed copy by calling member services.

You can change your PCP online through your MyWHA account or by calling member services. WHA will issue you a new ID card by mail confirming your new PCP's name. You may also access your ID card using the WHA mobile app.  The effective date is the first day of the month following notification. You must wait until the effective date before seeking care from your new PCP, or the services may not be covered.

What can I expect when I change PCPs?

WHA and its medical groups are working closely to ensure that your transition is as smooth as possible. Once you’ve selected your new PCP, you will share a new patient appointment to discuss any health issues you’re experiencing, questions or concerns you have and medications you’re currently taking. Your new PCP will coordinate, as necessary, new prescriptions and referrals to participating specialists.

You may wish to obtain your medical records from UC, to bring to your new patient appointment.

Can I still see my UC Davis specialist after January 1, 2018?

WHA is working with UC Davis Health to allow access to UC Davis Medical Group specialists and the UC Davis Medical Center with a referral from your PCP. More information will be coming soon.

I’m taking medications prescribed by a UC provider. What happens when I change PCPs?

You and your new PCP will discuss, at your new patient appointment, any health issues you’re experiencing, questions or concerns you have and medications you’re currently taking. Your new PCP will coordinate the replacement of needed prescriptions.

To ensure you don’t run out of your medications before you have your new prescriptions, make sure to:

  • refill any current prescriptions before your PCP changes
  • take advantage of a 90-day supply of maintenance medications through ESI’s mail order program, if desired
  • schedule your new patient appointment timely

Note: If your current prescription still has refills, and is not greater than one (1) year old, your refills are still valid.

I am currently receiving treatment through UC Davis Health, what is going to happen?

If you are currently with a UC Davis Health specialist and are undergoing the following, you may qualify for Continuity of Care (CoC) until it is safe to move to a specialist in your new medical group:

  • acute care treatment
  • serious chronic condition
  • pregnancy
  • terminal illness
  • care of a newborn child whose age is between birth and thirty-six (36) months
  • performance of surgery or other procedure that has been authorized by WHA

For more information or to obtain a Continuity of Care (CoC) Request Form, contact WHA Member Services. You may also access the CoC Form online.

Important: CoC is not available for care from your UC Davis PCP.

WHA is working with UC Davis Health to allow access to UC Davis Medical Group specialists and the UC Davis Medical Center with a referral from your PCP. More information will be coming soon.

How long can I continue to see my UC Davis PCP?

You can continue to utilize the UC Davis medical group for your medical needs through December 31, 2017.

What happens if I don't select a new PCP by January 1, 2018?

PCP changes can be made at any time. Your PCP effective date is the first day of the month following your request. To ensure a smooth transition for January 1, 2018, we recommend that you initiate this change no later than the 15th of December. You must wait until the effective date before seeking care from your new PCP or the services may not be covered. You are still covered under your existing physician until the effective date of your new doctor.

If you do not select a new PCP by 12/15/17, WHA will automatically assign you to a new PCP.

UC Employees

Why did UC employees lose Advantage Referral?

UC Davis Health determined that the high cost structure of its academic medical center is no longer compatible with a regional HMO like WHA, whose business strategy is to be a leader in market affordability. As part of this change, UC Davis Health will no longer participate in the Advantage Referral program.  While University of California employees can keep their current UC Davis Health PCP – or choose one in the future – access to the Advantage Referral program will no longer be available after December 31, 2017.

As an employee of UC do I have to change my PCP?

You and any covered family members may continue to see your current UC Davis Health primary care physician (PCP), if applicable, or select a UC Davis Health PCP in the future.
