Health Care Reform
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed into federal law on March 23, 2010. The ACA, also known as
"Obamacare", is intended to increase the number of Americans covered by health insurance and start to
decrease the cost of health care.
When key parts of the health care law take effect in 2014, there'll be a new way to get health insurance: the Health Insurance Exchange Marketplace, called Covered California.
Covered California is the marketplace that will allow individuals and small businesses to compare health plans and enroll in the product that best suits their needs - with no chance of being rejected for pre-existing medical conditions. Subsidies will also be available for qualifying individuals and families to help pay for their health coverage. Californians can begin to shop for health coverage in Covered California beginning October 2013, with coverage starting January 2014.
