Nurse Advice Line

WHA's Nurse Advice Line (NAL) is available to all WHA members 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days per year. Every call to our NAL is an opportunity to encourage positive healthcare choices and promote programs and facilities that help our members with their healthcare needs. This service is offered through Alere® and is staffed by experienced and highly-trained registered nurses who provide education to individuals on their health, treatment options, and available healthcare resources - allowing the member to make an informed decision for their specific situation, such as:

  • Caring for minor injuries and illnesses
  • Seeking the most appropriate help based on the medical concern
  • Identifying and addressing emergency medical concerns
  • Preparing for doctor visits
  • Understanding prescription medications
  • Helping with lifestyle choices to improve health
  • Providing education and support regarding decisions about tests

Providing 24/7 Support through Telephone Triage

Our NAL telephone triage service provides WHA members with a valuable touch-point by encouraging the appropriate use of healthcare resources and lowering out-of-pocket costs.

Using guideline-driven applications, NAL nurses provide the right support, at the right time and are able to evaluate callers on health symptoms and direct them to the appropriate level of care. If an urgent situation is discovered during a call, nurses will guide members to the most appropriate course of action - whether it means making a trip to the emergency room for urgent treatment, or simply receiving further advice from a team of experts.

NAL and Disease Management Program Connection

WHA's NAL is an important tool in identifying potential candidates for other health programs that we offer. Once a member contacts the NAL to discuss their health concerns, nurses can evaluate whether other health programs would be appropriate.

Key benefits include:

  • Identification of disease management (DM) candidates.
  • Opportunities for immediate referral and/or enrollment.
  • Program enrollment and participation encouragement.

WHA's DM Programs are also offered through Alere, which provides NAL nurses an opportunity to provide electronic information about the member's call to Alere DM nurses when the member is a participant in one of the programs.

In addition, the NAL nurse can identify candidates for case management or behavioral health services. For more information, please contact Member Services and ask to speak to a Health Promotion and Disease Management Representative.
